The Netherlands is easy to move around but hard to house cheaply. Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht are connected by excellent rail, so housing availability often matters more than small differences in daily spending.

01
The Netherlands has dense transport and short intercity travel times, which means the best housing decision may be outside the most famous city. Compare Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht as one connected system rather than isolated destinations.
For any rental, price service charges, utilities and commute cost alongside base rent. Cycling access can also reduce daily transport spending.
02
The Dutch IND states that self-employed applicants must meet general conditions, register with the Chamber of Commerce, satisfy income rules and show that their activity is of essential interest to the Dutch economy. RVO can assess experience, business plan and added value.
The residence permit is valid for a maximum of two years. This is not a simple digital-nomad permission, so remote workers should match their actual work structure to the correct IND route.
03
Frequent trains make it realistic to live in one city and work or socialize in another. Before paying an Amsterdam premium, compare door-to-door time from Rotterdam, Utrecht or a smaller rail-connected town.
