Housing works differently from many Western markets
Korean rentals can involve substantial deposits, and the choice between short-term furnished housing and a conventional local lease changes both cash requirements and monthly cost. For newcomers, flexibility can be worth paying for during the first weeks.
In Seoul and Busan, choose the subway line first. A neighborhood that is farther out but on a direct line can be more practical than a central location with multiple transfers.

Digital-nomad status became a formal system in 2026
Korea's Ministry of Justice announced that the digital-nomad or workation visa moved from pilot operation to a formal system from June 30, 2026. The revised framework extends the possible stay to as much as three years and introduced more flexible income rules, particularly for younger applicants and certain non-capital-region stays.
Because the thresholds can depend on age and location, applicants should use the latest Ministry of Justice guidance rather than old articles based on the 2024 pilot rules. Local employment and profit-making activities remain a separate legal question.

Seoul and Busan are car-free; Jeju is different
Seoul and Busan support daily life with extensive public transit and transit cards. Jeju is much more car-oriented for exploring beyond the main urban areas, so transport strategy should be built into the housing decision from day one.
